Given our recent celebration of the 99th anniversary of women’s right to vote (and the upcoming 2020 election), it’s time we really make equality for women happen!  Felena Hanson, President of San Diego’s local chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, was recently interviewed about this topic. We’ve come a long way but we still have a long way to go!

Some interesting facts:

  • According to the Gates foundation, if nothing changes in our current system we will no reach full gender parity for another 208 years.
  • $28 trillion could be added to the global GDP if we achieve full gender equality by 2025, reports the McKinsey Global Institute.

Additionally, there are several advocacy issues that are at the top of NAWBO San Diego’s list. These include:

  • Workplace – We must have access to affordable health care and paid family leave. It is also imperative that significant leadership gaps at the C-level & board level are addressed.
  • Government Contracting – Allocation of federal contracts to be performed and/or fulfilled by small businesses, particularly women-owned businesses must increase. Currently, only 5% of federals contracts go to women-owned business.
  • Advocacy + Community Involvement – There is a need for more women to use that right to get involved in their communities and legislature and to commit to continuously advocate for equality.
