Madison is best known for using the written word as the basis for layered, multivalent paintings that reveal the subjectivity of both image and text when they’re taken out of their original contexts and layered together. Inspired by history, strong feminine archetypes, and the certainty of death, she manipulates paint and other found materials around old book pages to experience words in a new way. The palimpsest of colors, text, and texture serve as a conduit for the viewer to channel unconscious fears, desires, and allow a connection to a more complex self, and overall, facilitates unique interpretations and a deeper personal connection to the art. Her award winning paintings are exhibited in galleries along the east coast, and is a member of the Women’s Caucus for Art of Greater Washington. She has degrees in Art History and Library Science, and in her day job, she supports public access to knowledge, cultural heritage, and lifelong learning. She lives with her husband and dog in Washington, DC.
This series of mixed media paintings interpret regrowth of nature over the man-made. Through human’s repeated pollution and misuse of the planet, these works abstractly depict how Mother Earth will find a way to take hold of her own again, and return to a natural state without the manmade. The underlying pages of text are interpreted to be human creation, communication, and power. Just like the oxidation of metal, that painted growth over top of the text represents nature’s changes and adaptation to a new environment. While these works directly symbolize the urgency of combating climate change, they also highlight the positive and natural significance of female leadership.
