Hera Hub is excited to announce a new blog series that we are starting called Women in Science Rock! We have interviewed a few women in San Diego who love science. In this blog series, these women will explain how they fell in love with science. From childhood science projects to graduate school, we will learn about the journey they went on that lead them to where they are today. The goal of this series is to encourage young girls to explore careers in math and science and to not just follow what is made “cool” by the media.
Our first blog post is about our member Dr. Sylvia Norman. Sylvia is the founder and principal consultant for Molecular Diagnostic Consulting. Molecular Diagnostics Consulting specializes in guiding biotechnology companies through the process of developing diagnostic products for commercialization. Sylvia tells us about how her interest in science began during the volcano experiment she had to make in elementary school. Her interest continued to grow throughout high school and she was hooked during her first biology class in college. She continued her studies in graduate school and discusses how she began her career. Finally Sylvia entered the entrepreneurial world so she could combine all of the skills she had gained throughout her career.
Sylvia recommends that young girls follow their heart and their passion. She also recommends that young girls find a teacher they can look up to in the science world. That teacher can help them develop the skills they need, find internships, and continue to help grow their love of science.
