Our Women in Science Rock continues with Dorothy Sears, Ph.D.  She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at UCSD.  Her research focus is on insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, eicosanoids, obesity, metabolic regulation, and breast cancer.  Her approach incorporates dietary intervention, systems biology, expression profiling, and single gene analyses in cell culture, rodent and human models.

Her goals are to identify and characterize genes, metabolites and metabolic pathways that regulate and/or are biomarkers of insulin resistance and breast cancer and which can be used as novel therapeutic targets or diagnostic tools.

In 10th Grade Dorothy had an amazing Biology teacher that was so energetic when he taught the class. His passion made her excited about Biology, DNA, and RNA. She completed her undergrad at USC. She received her Ph.D in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dorothy’s advice for young girls is to give science a try and if you like it go for it. She tells the girls to not worry about what the boys think.
