What people make up your personal support network? Likely there’s a mix of close friends and family that you can always count on for help and good advice. Now who serves that role for you professionally? Do you have a strong network of ambitious professionals that do the same?

While mentorship is a hot topic for enterprising young professionals, particularly women, this form of guidance may be lacking for women. A shortage of female mentors has been widely discussed, though mentorship is still touted as a main means to career advancement. But what if there was a different approach? A recent article by Jessica Hyman, co-founder of Rent the Runway, shares her views on support networks.

Photo Blog Post 8Hyman discusses her “personal board,” made up primarily of entrepreneurs around her age. More far-reaching than traditional mentorship, this group is a professional support network with a strong foundation in friendship. Hyman’s idea of a personal board feels more approachable, as opposed to the pressure of finding the perfect mentor. Instead of being on the “hunt” for an advisor, focus lies on creating a network of close friends that offers mutually beneficial support.

Mentorship is often seen as an older, more experienced colleague offering advice to younger employees. Better yet, a sponsor will actively champion the advisee for promotions and new projects. Entrepreneurship can feel like you have, or perhaps get, to be your own sponsor. Your support may come from a more general group, as you’re not looking for someone to help you get to a certain position or level within the company.

Such a network reflects women’s desire and success in working in teams. From politics to the boardroom, women are more eager and comfortable working together. While mentorship is important for all, women in particular can benefit from building larger groups. Developing a team can give this sense of teamwork even when you’re a one-woman show.

We all need a team, whether that is formal or informal. A personal board allows you to build your own team- with as many cheerleaders or sounding boards- as you need.
