Most small businesses don’t have a big budget for advertising, so many turn to what is commonly referred to as Public Relations (PR). What they are looking for is specifically called Media Relations or Earned Media. Entrepreneurs long for exposure to new clients so they push to get their business featured in a magazine, newspaper, or local news. The problem is… this is NOT easy! It’s a lot of work and can be very difficult to rise above the noise. Journalists are bombarded with hundreds of pitches every single day!
We recommend starting with this great interview about “pitching”, from Entrepreneur Media (emphasis on doing so during a pandemic). They cover do’s and don’ts, direct from one of the most coveted small business publications. Like most things… it’s all about relationships!
For additional tips and tactics, Felena Hanson breaks down her Media Relations methods.
Good luck!
