So your first question might be, well what are these conditions? Where can I find these conditions? We’ll get there, I promise, and soon, but first we must address something.
The Cornell study sought to find the conditions where female entrepreneurs had an advantage over males. Female-Owned businesses are being compared to male-owned businesses in terms of survival. These findings aren’t about how businesses are being formed by women, and while these statistics are exciting, the report speaks to how well female-owned businesses perform after formation. Success for female entrepreneurs is nothing new, but it’s motivating to see that female-owned businesses are stacking up in terms of business endurance.
Previous studies have focused on whether female-owned businesses outperform male-owned businesses, but have generally neglected to investigate whether conditions, such as industry or geography, mattered. Differences between male and female entrepreneurs may exist among traits, skills, and preferences. But these differences are also likely related to location and field.
So where do female-owned businesses outperform businesses owned by men? Women do better in large metropolitan areas, as well as in industries such as educational services, clothing, gift-giving, and alcohol sales. More research is being done on why this is the case. But this initial finding on these differences, and that female-owned businesses are doing better under some circumstances, is significant.
If you’re a female entrepreneur in a big city, or work in one of those particular industries, great! But the conversation about female-owned and male-owned businesses is always changing, and we’re determining where it goes next.
