This picture represents resilience, strength, and determination! This warrior just finished grueling radiation therapy and “rang the bell” shortly before her photoshoot. Earlier in the year, she also had a double mastectomy and thyroid removal. We were able to capture her survival and joy for life during her photoshoot, and this picture represents her reflecting on everything she has overcome.

The image was created as an experiment and photographed in a distorted manner—so surreal and abstract which incites curiosity and fascination. The soft lighting really makes it look ethereal. There is an element of movement and elegance about the image, like a blooming flower, opening up petal by petal. There is a certain mystery and beauty attached to it; hence, it creates a personal bond with everyone.

Barbara Steinberg, owner of Intimate Photography
Barbara Steinberg’s passion for boudoir photography was ignited when she read an article about a New York-based photographer capturing images of military wives and girlfriends to send to their partners on deployment. Inspired by this idea, Barbara launched Intimate Photography in San Diego two decades ago. Over the years, her career has been deeply fulfilling, allowing her to capture the beauty and confidence of her clients through her lens.
It illustrates how beautiful women are in an artistic way.

It’s almost impossible to choose a FAVORITE photo, but this is one of my favorites. It is nothing fancy or glamorous but is is very special to me. This is my Dad, Dannie. I took this when I was in one of my first photography classes & we were learning on film. Not because it was cool & retro, because that’s how cameras used to work. He & my mom came to San Diego to visit me and I took them to Tijuana. (It was the early 90s) He had the best time talking to everyone & haggling with the vendors. This picture is just him having a ball that day. One of the things I like about this is that I developed the film & created this 8X10 in the darkroom & when I found this photo in a box a few years ago, another copy was with it that was a little over exposed, reminding me of how much labor went into getting one properly exposed print. But it was worth it because after you loose your loved ones their photos are priceless. 🩵

I love to find the beauty in real, un-staged moments. That’s possible anytime, of course. This moment had the potential for the sort of beauty I most enjoy—a strong composition combined with emotional resonance. My clients ordered a large print of this image, which has pride of place above their piano!
