Ready to make your brand unforgettable? Writing a compelling tagline that’s clear, memorable and relevant for the clients you want to serve is a great first step. And creating one isn’t as daunting as you might think, even if you’re not a writer.

What is a tagline?

A tagline is one simple sentence that tells people what you sell, who you serve, and why they should choose you.

HERE ARE THE 5 SIMPLE STEPS TO CREATE YOUR COMPELLING TAGLINE:

Step 1: What Do You Sell?

What do people pay you for? Keep this simple, clear and easy to understand.

Here’s an example.
Meet Elisa, a graphic designer.
What does she sell? Graphic design services.

See what I mean? Simple, clear and easy to understand.

Step 2: Who Do You Serve?

A lot of marketers talk about avatars and perfect clients. The problem with creating a fictional avatar is this person doesn’t exist. You want to talk to real people who have problems you can solve. Who are they? What problem are they looking to solve related to what you sell? What do they say they want? A good way to find these answers is to review current or previous clients and make a note of any commonalities or trends. If you are NOT working with the clients you want to be working with, then write about a real person who you’d love to work with.

Elisa works with women owned event companies.

Step 3: What Problem Do You Solve (Part 1):

Finding the words real people use to describe their problems related to what you offer is critical in gaining trust. How do you find those words? You can use what potential clients have shared during consultations or by asking previous clients what they were struggling with before hiring you.

Elisa heard two complaints over and over again:

I’m tired of paying a ton of money for graphics that look generic.
I loved my former graphic designer but she was always late which put a lot of stress on me and my team.

Elisa creates her first tagline that addresses her clients’ real problems:
Creative & Affordable Graphic Design Services for Event Companies

This is a great start BUT what would make Elisa stand out even more? Let’s find out in Part 2.

Step 4: What Makes You Unique? (Part 2):

What’s your special something – your secret sauce – your superpower – that thing that you do that’s unique, special and highly valuable in your process or your results. What makes you the best decision your potential client could ever make?

After asking her clients a few key questions, Elisa discovers that her clients ultimately want one thing: To sell out their events. She also learns what makes her unique: Her on-time delivery of eye-catching designs that result in increased ticket sales for her clients.

Step 5: Weaving it All Together in One Compelling Tagline:

Use your answers from steps 1-4 to write your compelling tagline that captivates the clients you want to work with in one simple statement.

Here’s how Elisa incorporates what she’s discovered in a compelling tagline for her business:
Sell More Tickets with Eye-Catching Designs as Unique as Your Events

If you follow these 5 simple steps, you’ll have a compelling tagline that makes your business unforgettable!
