Have you ever just sat and thought to yourself:

  • Who am I meant to be?
  • What’s my God-given purpose?
  • When am I at my best?
  • Why am I important?
  • How would I like to be remembered?

Did you know all the above questions are LEGACY questions? Legacy encompasses who, what, when, why, and how you matter! It allows you to leave an impact, generation to generation, on all the intricacies of you.

A legacy is more than money, it is valued, and that value is YOU!

I remember my whole family would gather at my grandmother’s house for the holidays.  She would wake early in the morning before the sun was up, and while everyone else was fast asleep, she would begin her prep work for cooking our holiday meal.

This meant we usually woke up to the scent of grandma’s cooking, and a feast prepared for us all to enjoy.  One of my favorite foods prepared by my grandmother was her sweet potato bread – to this day I long for a taste of her famous sweet potato bread.

My grandmother didn’t keep a record of her recipes. She kept them in her head, and never passed them down to my mother or her siblings. So, she took many of her recipes with her to the grave. Unfortunately, the next generations will not benefit from having the same shared experience those from my generation had of waking up to the smell of her infamous sweet potato bread. This legacy died right along with her.

Don’t let this happen to you. Take time to sit with your parents, grandparents, children, aunts, and uncles to learn about the rich traditions, recipes, and history of your family!

Beyond Legacy is here to help you have simple open conversations about yourself and your legacy, traditions, and anything you value worth passing down.

These legacies could be as simple as a great-aunt’s recipe or as complicated as planning an inheritance. Either way, we’d like to provide you with fun and simple ways to begin the process of chronicling your legacy.  Consider trying one of the following to start the process:

  1. Create a recipe book – If you are someone who loves to cook, write down your recipes.
  2. Create a photo album, scrapbook, or journal – These are simply creative ways to share a story, experience, or tradition. Maybe these are habits, trips, or special holiday traditions you want to keep going in the family.
  3. Create a poster with your favorite scripture or quotes – These can be words of encouragement that have anchored you and helped you through parenting, careers, school, relationships, etc.
  4. Share lessons learned – Prepare the next generation by teaching them lessons learned through your experience as a business owner.
  5. Create or participate in charities that you believe in.
  6. Give back to your school as an alumnus.

Remember, a legacy is anything you value, trust, support, and want to continue.
