It’s National Words Matter Week

[March 2-8], presented by the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors. This week celebrates the importance of the written word. Guest contributor Candace Conradi shares the necessity of using your words to share your voice.

Maybe writing is a little like exercise and diet. Unless you are a writer or love the art of the written word, it is just another annoying “to do” on your long list of busy.

hand with pen writingBut consider the immense value of your voice being translated and shaped into words, into a message that can change the lives of others. If you reflect on the history of the written word, from Shakespeare to our Declaration of Independence, to the written speeches of Martin Luther King, to the thousand up thousand inspirational quotes that shift our perspective, then you know the rich, life-changing value of your message. Why are you passionate about what you do? I know of no entrepreneur that doesn’t have a deeply seeded “need” to drive forward with their vision. If you don’t tell your story, how will others find their way to the nourishing well of your authentic, unique life-changing gifts?

Our own vulnerability is the most challenging border we cross over. To live in the land of our ultimate possibility, one must take a deep breath and allow their vulnerability to lead the way. You may not be the most amazing writer on the planet. You may view the task before you as one might view an annoying fly, buzzing around your head. But to connect with others, to connect intimately with your goals and passion, the written word is like no other bridge into the deep inner world of our purposeful work.

Brene Brown, facing down the personal heartache of unjust and cruel criticism, found the power of her own vulnerability in Teddy Roosevelt’s words:

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

Don’t wait to share your passion, your message your story, in YOUR own words, using YOUR voice. It may not change the world but it will, with all certainty, change everything in your world!
